Thank you so much for volunteering! Our teachers work so hard for our students and really feel appreciated when they have parents helping out!

***It is District policy that money cannot be collected by Room Parents.***

PTA will send out a theme and the daily themes for Teacher Appreciation week (In May.) Every class decorates their door (you orchestrate this) in the theme or something fun that your teacher likes.

It is nice to do something for their birthday (or half-birthday for summer ones).

Room Parent - Teacher Checklist Items:

  • Contact information: How does the teacher prefer to be contacted by you and by the other class parents? Can you help recruit the last few families to join membership toolkit?

  • Ongoing volunteer support needs: Info for these is often gathered at Back to school night. Do they need help finding volunteers or coordinating? (This can even be a separate job) What volunteer jobs repeat week to week? I.e., table-time helpers, weekly readers, science lab & materials prep, recess supervisors, copy/folder helpers. Do

  • Classroom activity dates and support needs: When are larger activities and events happening and will your teacher need parent support? I.e., field trips, parties.

  • School activity dates and support needs: Are there holiday performances, fundraisers, and other school-wide events your teacher will need classroom participation from parents in?

  • School Supplies: What does the teacher need that (s)he would have to pay for out-of-pocket?  Can parents help? I.e., tissues, antibacterial wipes, art supplies, dry-erase markers, glue. (I check in every pretty much every week to see how supplies are going or if all the families should start saving Toilet paper rolls for a project. Parents love lots of notice!)

  • Teacher’s “favorites”: Each teacher has a favorites page in the class message board on MTK. Find out what if there are any changes. (email gallardopta@gmail.com for assistance.)

  • Classroom party dates and plans: Get all the details on class parties. Do they have a standard set of activities you just need to get the supplies for? Do you need to come up with everything on your own?

- How many class parties will you have and when? Who plans (teacher or parents)?

- Food requirements (healthy or sweets)?

- Food allergy considerations?

- Timing and activities/games/crafts?

  • Student Birthdays: Are parents allowed to bring in food  If not, what is the plan for celebrating if so, i.e. birthday child gets a balloon on their day waiting attached to their chair or birthday child brings their favorite book to the class to add to the library.

  • Parent Teacher Conference Scheduling: Find out if the teacher would like your help with setting up an online sign up.

Allergy friendly ideas for your next class event (be it birthday brunch or holiday party):

  • Warm apple cider (or hot chocolate if there are no dairy/soy allergies)
  • Apple slice "nachos" - caramel drizzle with fun toppings, marshmallows, mini chocolate chips, rice krisipies, sprinkles

Teacher Appreciation - Door Decorating

Door Diagram Link

What: Decorate Your Teacher's class door (see the door dimension hand out but DOUBLE CHECK the handle side!)

Materials: We have big colored paper in the FAME closet. (35x82) You can also get a key to the closet during school hours if you are a cleared volunteer or right after school if not. Cheap plastic tablecloths are another good background option.

ONLY Use painters tape to attach to the door (you'll want tape all around the perimeter) or anything painted, but something stronger if you are attaching things to the paper backdrop. For some reason the first week of May is often REALLY WINDY! (The school is currently being painted. We have permission to tape to the new paint, but we want to be really, really careful, so painters tape only please!)

You can have the students' name on something on the door or their picture, but not both.

B&W white engineering prints are a cheap way to get a big graphic printed if you aren't feeling super artistic. (I've altered coloring book pages in photoshop.) Or tile print in adobe reader. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf_UVm4NdIU) Sometimes I add color with chalk pastels.
